Serves an avatar image of at most 48 by 48 pixels: a user's, a contact's, or a generic one. path, path-small, and path-large in the avatar reads point here.

No authentication is needed, so an <img> tag can load it directly. Anyone who has the filename can load the image.

Images are stored as WebP. Ask for the same name with .jpg or .png and you get a JPEG or PNG copy, converted on first request and kept on disk; a JPEG has a white background in place of transparency. The answer carries Cache-Control: public, max-age=2592000 (30 days), Expires, Last-Modified, and a strong ETag. Send If-None-Match or If-Modified-Since to get a bodyless 304 while your copy is current. A filename never changes content, so a new avatar has a new filename; a deleted avatar returns 404 here, but copies already cached by browsers or proxies can outlive it by up to 30 days.

For the image of at most 256 by 256 pixels, call GET /avatar/256/{filename}.
